What attracted you to real estate? How did you end up working for the Columbus Retail Team?
My passion for commercial real estate—particularly retail brokerage—was inspired by my oldest brother, Bradley, who also works in the industry. He has an incredible work ethic and a natural ability to connect with people, so I was always curious to see what career path he would choose. Watching him develop a love for real estate in college to eventually becoming a commercial real estate appraiser after graduation sparked my interest in the field.
After many late-night conversations about the industry and potential opportunities, I decided to pursue a real estate degree at The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business. A defining moment in my journey was attending a networking event through the Ohio State Center for Real Estate, where I introduced myself to Paul Krimm, the President of Colliers | Columbus. That introduction led to follow-up conversations and, ultimately, an internship with the retail brokerage team. Since joining, I have gained hands-on experience in leasing strategy, market research, and deal-making, reinforcing my passion for the industry.
Being from Connecticut, what differences do you notice between the East Coast and Midwest markets? What about Columbus stands out to you?
Coming from Connecticut, I’ve noticed some key differences between the two markets. The East Coast is characterized by dense urban environments, making it more challenging to break into brokerage, as the retail sector is highly mature. Many retailers focus on high-foot-traffic areas, historic districts, and transit-oriented developments.
In contrast, Columbus is one of the fastest-growing markets in the U.S., offering significant room for strategic expansion. The city’s affordability, population growth, and collaborative work environment among brokers create exciting opportunities for both established professionals and those new to the industry. Columbus has a unique balance of strong suburban retail corridors and emerging urban developments, making it an appealing market for a diverse range of retail concepts.
What are the biggest challenges and opportunities you observe in retail real estate?
One of the biggest challenges in retail real estate is the constant need for brokers to adapt to evolving consumer preferences. The rise of e-commerce has forced brick-and-mortar retailers to prioritize experiential retail, omni-channel integration, and unique store formats to stay competitive. Additionally, factors like shifting demographics and rising construction costs require creative solutions from both landlords and tenants.
On the opportunity side, retail remains incredibly dynamic and has proven more resilient than other sectors post-COVID-19. There is strong demand for mixed-use developments, second-generation restaurant spaces, and well-positioned outparcels. As Columbus continues to grow, so does its consumer base, creating a prime environment for retailers looking to expand and refine their brand presence. The city’s evolving demographics and increasing foot traffic make it an attractive market for both national and local retailers.
What is your favorite project you've worked on as a part of the team thus far?
One of my favorite projects has been working on Capella Centre, where I’ve had the opportunity to assist with two different leasing efforts. We successfully secured a deal with an innovative ice cream concept, and I am now actively marketing a second-generation Subway space.
Capella Centre is a high-quality retail property in the Polaris submarket—one of the top-performing trade areas in Central Ohio. The two-building center benefits from a strong tenant mix, ample parking, and proximity to JPMorgan Chase’s regional headquarters, which brings in a steady daytime population.
Beyond Capella Centre, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a diverse mix of properties, including malls, plazas, big-box spaces, and land leases. Each asset type presents unique challenges and opportunities, and I’ve enjoyed learning how to tailor leasing strategies for different retail environments.
What aspects of commercial real estate has this internship made you more interested in?
This internship has reinforced my interest in leasing strategy and the deal-making side of brokerage. I enjoy identifying potential tenants, crafting leasing strategies, and understanding how different retailers contribute to the success of a development. Working on tenant mix strategies has given me a deeper appreciation for how thoughtful planning can drive foot traffic and maximize property value.
I’ve also become more interested in the long-term vision behind placemaking—how the right retail environment can transform neighborhoods and create lasting value in communities. Seeing how leasing decisions shape the success of a retail center has made me more excited about the strategic and creative aspects of the industry.
What skills do you think are most important for success in this industry, and which skills are you developing during your internship?
Success in retail brokerage requires a combination of relationship-building, market knowledge, analytical thinking, and adaptability. Strong communication skills are essential when working with landlords, tenants, and industry professionals. Negotiation skills and strategic thinking are also crucial for structuring deals that create long-term value for all parties involved.
During my internship, I sharpened my ability to identify market trends, conduct tenant prospecting, and develop leasing strategies. I am also refining my negotiation skills and gaining a deeper understanding of the financial aspects of real estate transactions. Each day presents new challenges and learning opportunities, and I’m excited to continue developing the skills necessary for a successful career in retail brokerage.
